SMS (Short Message Service) is the ability to send and receive text messages using mobile devices. The text can be comprised of words, numbers, or an alphanumeric combination. SMS was created as part of the GSM Phase 1 standard and each message can be up to 160 characters is length.
The Alerts Engine enables users to send SMS messages to any mobile device such as regular pagers, 2-way pagers, cell phones, Palm Pilot, PocketPCs, and even desktop PCs.
The recipient of an SMS message is identified by a unique phone number which specifies the destination device.
The front end of the Alerts Engine has entry forms to accept the phone number and the message text from the user. IrisLogic offers four distinct ways to enter alerts:
HTML - accessible from any Web browser
WML - accessible from a WAP phone
VXML - accessible from a regular land-line telephone
WCA - accessible from a Palm Pilot device
The front end submits the alert to a J2EE compliant application server (WebLogic) where it is passed to an enterprise Java bean (EJB). The EJB accesses a proprietary database which maps every possible phone number to a phone carrier. After the phone carrier has been determined, the EJB communicates with the SMS gateway of that particular carrier. Since most carriers today have implemented SMTP gateways in their SMS networks, IrisLogic uses the standard JavaMail API to forward the message to the carrier.
IrisLogic's Alerts Engine solution is currently deployed in WebLogic running on Windows 2000 Server.
